This is a small group of people who meet weekly on Friday mornings at the church for fellowship (coffee and donuts) from 9:30 to 10 am and then conversation and learning (from 10-11 am) inspired by various religious topics. In the past years, the participation in the group has included retired clergy which enriches our discussion. The group determines what topics we want to discuss, and purchase materials as needed. Each week’s discussion will stand on it’s own. So come for all or come when you can. We are taking time off for the summer, but will resume weekly meeting again after Labor Day.
We have read books and more frequently followed DVD series from the Great Lectures offerings. The presenters/lecturers are well known theologians. A partial list of some of the topics includes:
- Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture
- Living the Questions – the wisdom of progressive Christianity
- Death, Dying and the Afterlife
- How Jesus became God
- Soul Searching – the life of Thomas Merton
- Embracing an Adult Faith
- Embracing Emergence Christianity by Phyllis Tickle
- Great figures of the New Testament
The fellowship is warm, the conversation is lively and provocative. The practice of open and inclusive thoughts and ideas in the spirit of UCC “Big Tent” faith journeys provides a venue for those with a history of involvement in Peace Dale UCC, the UCC, denominational (local, regional, national) to identify intersections of personal faith, corporate identity, and Congregational values with contemporary and historic events and changes.
