ALS Effort
December 2024
A recent article in Rhode Island independent newspapers highlighted ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Bill Seymour interviewed one of our congregants about her experience with ALS and her involvement with the Louise Wilcox ALS Clinic at Rhode Island Hospital. (The Independent, Narragansett Times, East Greenwich Pendulum).

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is a progressive disease that in which a person's brain loses connection with their muscles, slowly taking away their ability to walk, talk, eat, and, eventually, breathe.Although there is still no cure or treatment that halts progression, new treatments are helping to slow and ease symptoms. (ALS.org) Assistive technology, such as computer-enhanced communication devices, help people with ALS manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

The Louise Wilcox ALS Clinic, a member of ALS Rhode Island, offers a multidisciplinary approach for the evaluation and management of ALS. The purpose of the clinic is to help patients maintain a maximum level of neurological functioning in a supportive and understanding environment. The clinic is an active participant in the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS) for clinical trials and other research in ALS.
